In 2025, RAIN RFID tag shipments reached about 58B, the vast majority being wet inlays of PET film plus aluminium-etched antenna plus silicon chip. PET is not biodegradable; the aluminium antenna is about 0.3g per tag, cumulatively 17,000 tonnes of aluminium per year — comparable to the aluminium in 2 million cars. 02Paper-based antennas & separable inlays

Two technical routes run in parallel. The first is the paper-based antenna: printing the antenna directly on cellulose paper with conductive silver paste or carbon-based ink, replacing aluminium etching. Stora Enso and PulpaCap have launched all-paper RFID tags processable in standard paper recycling streams, with silver usage down to 0.02g per tag. The second is the separable inlay: keeping the conventional aluminium antenna but designing it to peel off on heating — during paper-pulp recycling, 60°C hot water separates the inlay from the fibres, and the aluminium and chip are magnetically recovered. Avery Dennison's AD Pro peel-off series already reaches 85% aluminium recovery. The trade-offs differ: paper antennas cost slightly more with 15% shorter read range; separable inlays add only marginal cost but require matching recycling facilities.

03Recycling grades & circular economy

To make recycling actionable, GS1 and the RAIN Alliance are drafting an "RFID tag recycling grade" standard: Grade A (fully biodegradable, paper-based, chipless), Grade B (separable inlay with matching recycling), Grade C (conventional inlay, requiring specialist handling). Brands mark the grade on packaging so consumers and recyclers can see it at a glance. On the circular economy side, recovered aluminium and silver can be re-smelted into new antenna feedstock, closing the loop and cutting tag carbon footprint by 60%. For buyers, we recommend writing a hard target into tenders — "50% of tags at Grade B or above by 2027" — both forward-looking compliance and a lever to force supply-chain upgrade.
